Competition Guidelines
Competition Readiness
In order for your skater to be ready for competition, they must PRACTICE!
Because of limited ice availability, skaters are required to attend group class at least once a week to compete.
Although we will have a couple of class days dedicated to competition prep, the primary time for skaters to practice their routine will be during the last 30 minutes of the group class. When available, skaters can also schedule private lessons during public skate.
Fees
To compete, skaters must pay all associated competition fees. The cost varies for each competition; however, you can expect to pay $150-$200 per event.
Skaters will also be required to wear a figure skating outfit appropriate for their program. Most of our skaters wear outfits between $20-$150.
All non-virtual competitions will require an overnight stay. Travel is an individual cost and will vary from family to family. We will send out information prior to any competition about preferred hotels based on prior years' experience, but there is no 'team integrity' requirement.
Shreveport Figure Skating will charge a set fee per competition to cover coach hotel and travel fees. Fee will vary based on length of competition and location. The costs will be kept to a minimum, as one of our primary goals is to maintain an affordable program so that the maximum number of people can participate.
Competition Day
On competition day please arrive at the rink two hours prior to your competition time. This will allow skaters time for check in, off-ice warm ups, any possible wardrobe or cosmetic touch ups, and on-ice warm up.
Be prepared for an early morning and a long day! Practice ice typically begins as early as 5AM and the last competition of the day could be as late as 7PM.
The meal prior to the skater's competition should be light. It is advised skaters avoid trying new foods during that meal to prevent any potential negative side effects.
The results of the competition are announced shortly after the last skater of the group competes. Parents are encouraged to take pictures of their skater during the award ceremony.
Competition Attire
For practice sessions at the competition rink, skaters are free to wear their regular practice attire. Some skaters may choose to practice in their competition outfit, but it not required.
Competition dresses or outfits must be purchased far in advance of the competition to allow for any alterations necessary to be made. Dresses purchased on Ebay typically are custom made, which require 2-3 months for delivery. Amazon does have a limited selection of dresses that can be shipped within weeks.
It is the choice of the skater and parents of what the competition outfit looks like. Some skaters choose to purchase stock dresses/outfits and rhinestone them themselves while others purchase dresses/outfits already designed.
Male skaters will typically wear black skating pants (that look like slacks) and a coordinating top that matches their music.
